The photography lighting equipment falls in 3 basic categories – the light source, the light modifiers, & the stands and grips.
Light Source
The artificial light source can be divided into 2 categories:
Continuous lights – These lights are basic and are used at home, such as –fluorescent lights, tungsten bulbs, HMI lights and LEDs. They are cheap, but not as flexible as studio flash lights.
Studio flash lights – They are categorized into flash guns and strobes. Flash guns are known as speed lights, and these are external flashes whose main purpose is to increase flash range. Strobes are powerful and large, and function independent of camera.
Light Modifiers
Light modifiers are required in lighting setup to control the stretch of light.
Some modifiers reflect the light and are known as reflectors, while others diffuse the light and are known as diffusers.
Other light modifiers are soft boxes and umbrellas. Umbrellas are one of the basic equipments in lighting and you will find them in any green screen photography lighting equipment kit. They soften the light and spread it evenly over a large area. Soft-boxes soften the light and diffuse it.
Light Stands & Grips
Grips mean anything which supports lighting setup. They include light stands, clips and clamps, and boom arms, which are used to hold reflectors, backdrops and light sources. Light stands are of 2 types – heavy duty C stands and light weight stands. Light weight stands are good to use in indoor shots, because they are very portable. C stands are more stable, durable & can take up more weight than light weight stands.
