Do Hobby Photographers Need DSLRs Or Smart Phones Are Good Enough?

With time, the smart phones are getting much better. Now they have features like Wi-Fi, touch screen, high megapixel cameras, flash, different modes for taking photos, good lenses and great apps. These phones can capture photos and videos at anytime & anywhere, because you have your smart phones always ready to capture. Even the basic smart phones come with 3.5 or 5 megapixels camera and LED flash. Further, there are many high quality smart phones also that come with 8, 12 or 13 MP cameras.

But can a smart phone be equivalent to a digital camera?

Talking of professional photography, no one could do without a digital camera. Camera is the first and most important equipment in photography business. Without a camera, the professional photographer would not look professional. However, if we talk of hobby photographers, smart phones can substitute digital cameras. But again it depends on how much the person is serious about his/her hobby. If the person is fully serious about his/her hobby, then he/she will have to purchase a digital camera. The digital cameras are better than smart phones in the following ways: -

• The digital cameras have optical zoom, larger and powerful image sensors, wide angle capacity, larger & interchangeable lenses, and advanced settings such as aperture priority.
• The cameras produce higher quality photos as compared to smart phones.
• The smart phones can be easily damaged in rainy weather or by a fall. However, the cameras specifically purchased to be used in extreme climatic conditions do not get ruined so easily.

From the above discussion, it is clear that smart phones cannot be used by professionals as standard photography studio equipment as a substitute to digital cameras. Those who do not take their photography hobby seriously can click their photos with smart phones. But those who are seriously pursuing photography as a hobby should get their hands on a digital camera.
